Installing a manual hub conversion kit on your truck, Jeep, or SUV can be a great way to boost the strength of your front axle, while giving you the added confidence to know your hubs are positively locked and ready for the terrain. Even better, an auto to manual locking hub conversion kit can address a potential weak point in your all-wheel or four-wheel drive system—and make trailside service a lot easier.

If you’ve got a vehicle that allows you to switch from two-wheel to four-wheel drive, it probably has a setup that locks the front wheels to the front axle, which engages power to all of the wheels. Nowadays, most vehicles let you do that from inside the vehicle, likely through a vacuum- or electrically assisted system. A manual hub conversion kit replaces that stock automatic, electric, or vacuum hub locking system with one that uses a mechanical engagement.
While automatic locking hubs are mighty convenient for vehicles that spend more time commuting and running errands, if your truck, Jeep, or SUV likes to play in the dirt, then a manual locking hub conversion can simplify your front axle setup, eliminate some vacuum plumbing or wiring, and make the whole system more reliable, particularly on older vehicles.
We’ve already mentioned that an automatic to manual locking hub conversion kit can strengthen and simplify your front axle, but perhaps more importantly, it can eliminate some drag in your drivetrain too. By reducing the amount of moving parts in the four-wheel drive system, you’re also reducing wear and tear on critical components, and better still, you may even potentially experience better fuel economy.
You’ll find manual locking hub conversion kits available for several axle models popular with the off-roading crowd, including hub conversions for the Dana 30, Dana 44, and Dana 60. You’ll often find these axles under Jeep Wranglers and Dodge Ram trucks—but there are also manual hub conversion kits available for four-wheel drive trucks and SUVs from Ford, Toyota, and others as well.
Converting your truck, Jeep, or SUV’s automatic locking hubs to manual ones has a ton of upside, whether you’re a hardcore off-roader or not. If you’re ready to make the switch to manual locking hubs, you’ve got plenty of applications available now, including hub conversion kits for the Dana 30 and Dana 44.
A no-name hub conversion kit could literally leave you stranded in the middle of nowhere! That’s why Summit Racing Equipment only carries trusted name brands, like Yukon Gear & Axle, Dorman, Mile Marker, TeraFlex, and more. Let’s build it together!
