By 1968, it was clear that the GTO’s recipe of “big engine, mid-size car” was a hit—so the Goat upped the ante during its second generation (1968-72). As with the Tempest/LeMans and all of GM’s other A-body intermediates, the GTO got a radically restyled body, along with some cool options like a body-keyed Endura bumper, hideaway headlights, and a hood-mounted tach. In 1969, Pontiac unleashed the GTO ‘Judge’ edition, which included a potent Ram Air series engine, special wheels, spoiler, Hurst shifter, and groovy stripe package. A year later, Pontiac gave the GTO a new 455 cubic inch V8, which helped the Goat scoot across the 1/4-mile stripe in under 15 seconds. Coupe and convertible body styles remained popular. By 1972, lower compression and higher insurance rates conspired to end the muscle car era—the writing was on the wall as the GTO reverted back to an option package on the LeMans.
