Commonly referred to as “squarebody” trucks, third-generation (1973-86) Chevy C-Series pickup trucks (for 1987 only, the were called R-Series), enjoyed the longest production run of any of the Chevy pickup trucks. With over a decade of incremental evolutions, each R-Series iteration provided better fuel efficiency, safety, utility, and performance over the previous year. R-Series trucks could be had with a Fleetside or Stepside bed, and for the first time Chevy half-ton truck buyers could get a diesel engine in their pickup. Gen3 also introduced the name “Silverado” as a trim package in 1975. The name would eventually replace the C/K-Series as the truck’s model designation. As a final footnote, to prepare for the introduction of fuel injection and a new body style, Chevy changed the familiar C-Series designations to the R-Series, with “R” denoting two-wheel-drive.
