Easily identifiable by its square headlights, the Jeep® Wrangler YJ (1987-95) was the first to wear the Wrangler nameplate. Though its body tub is similar to the CJ-7’s, the Wrangler YJ is a completely different vehicle. This Wrangler still used leaf springs front and back, but several new transmissions, transfer cases, and vehicle components were introduced through the YJ’s run—due in large part to AMC’s (and later Chrysler’s) business alliances with Renault and Peugeot. The YJ was the first Wrangler (although not the first Jeep vehicle) to carry the legendary 4.0L H.O. inline six engine. As the final evolution of the straight-six that had its roots in the early 1960s, its torque and ruggedness quickly established the 4.0L as a fantastic motor for off-roading. The YJ generation also brought the world the Islander and Sahara trims, as well as a unique Renegade version that sported exclusive fenders and body accents.
