Considered by many to be one of the best SUVs of all time, the Jeep® Cherokee XJ was produced from 1984 to 2001. In 1997, well over a decade into its production cycle, the XJ saw its first significant exterior and interior styling update. Changes to the body consisted of a new steel liftgate in place of the previous fiberglass piece, a stiffer frame, a more aerodynamic front header panel, a new spare tire carrier, and more rounded angles. The interior received additional refinements, including a new instrument panel featuring a blow-molded symmetrical retainer structure. Additional changes were made to later-year XJs throughout their production cycle, including an updated, equal-length intake manifold in 1999 and a coil-on-plug ignition system in 2000. Like their 1984-96 predecessors, these XJs continued to be popular among off-roading enthusiasts and police fleets before ceasing production in 2001.
