A return to round headlights may have been the most noticeable change in the Jeep® Wrangler TJ (1997-2006), but the TJ was completely redesigned from the ground-up. Publications of the time described the TJ as a leap forward in Wrangler evolution—coil springs were now at each corner, new Chrysler-sourced transmissions improved reliability, and the 4.0L engine was redesigned for extra strength. The Wrangler TJ also introduced two important trims: the Rubicon, which would set the bar for factory-equipped off-road performance; and the Scrambler-inspired Unlimited LJ, which gave enthusiasts a longer wheelbase and more cargo capacity. It’s important to note that the Wrangler TJ was introduced in early 1996 as a 1997 model, meaning that with YJ production ending in 1995, a 1996 Wrangler technically doesn’t exist.
